Reading Matters

When you support Mile High United Way’s Colorado Reading Corps, you're ensuring children are reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade.

Changing the odds for young students
We know reading matters, especially in third grade.

1 in 4 Colorado third graders does not read proficiently at grade level*

Children reading at grade level by the end of third grade are 4 times more likely to graduate high school**

When children transition from third grade to fourth, they make a switch: from learning to read  to reading to learn. Their grade-level reading skills enable them to begin mastering other important subjects, like math and science. This pivotal time in a child’s life can affect their long-term success.**

Every child that is not reading at grade level by the end of third grade risks falling behind and never fully catching up.

Here's how we're helping.

Last year, over 1,200 students across Metro Denver participated in Colorado Reading Corps

94% of students made academic progress in literacy skills such as phoenetics and comprehension

80% of Colorado Reading Corps students exceeded their annual literacy targets

Colorado Reading Corps is a Mile High United Way intiative that supports kindergarten through third-grade students in four Colorado school districts by placing tutors in classrooms for a full school year to work one-on-one with struggling readers. And we're seeing great results.*
